Catch a Word
Sure, Candy Land and Chutes and Ladders are fun – the first 300 times. After that, let's face it, the excitement starts to dwindle. Mom needs a new game, preferably one that teaches her enthusiastic opponent something useful.
Word Chase!, a reading-readiness board game for kids ages 4 and up, has a refreshing back-to-basics approach. Created by a team of educational specialists and illustrated by children's book artist Linda Bronson, the game's goal is to familiarize children with the top 25 building block words in the English language, otherwise known as "sight words" (or, in educator-speak, the "Dolch List"). The most common stumbling blocks for beginning readers, these words are thought to be the key to easy reading.
Beyond Learning, the company behind it all, is into educational games for children and families that don't require high-tech equipment. They're also big on environmental responsibility – all products are printed on recycled paper using natural soy-based inks, and a percentage of each sale is donated to CHEC, the Children's Health and Environmental Coalition.
Less plastic junk in your house means less plastic junk in the landfills – and a well-earned break from Hungry, Hungry Hippos.
