  • I think I'm having a much harder time with the K adjustment than dd. She loves it already, but I find it so hard to let her walk into the school, stay for 7 hours, and meet her back outside. I feel like I don't know anything that's going on inside besides little snippets from her unreliable memory. How am I going to learn about what she's doing?

    • I feel your pain. Same situation. I am looking for volunteer opportunities inthe school. You will also see work come home, which can be a catalyst for a conversation. Also, once you get to know other paretns you can ask what they glean from conversations with their kids. The trick is to try and not make kid feel like they are a victim of the inquisition when they come home every day.

      • My mother, who taught for 30 years, just told me that this is the beginning of learning to let go. As long as you like and trust the school, we have to come to terms that we will never learn all that goes on during the day. Also, no news is good news. We will hear if there is a problem and learn more at Open School/Meet the Teacher night.

        • As a mom of a kid with learning issues, I do not think you can rely upon a teacher to pick up everything, they just have too many kids to keep track of, and they are just not trained to spot all issues.

          • if you have specific concerns bring them up with the teacher, otherwise just let go a bit. it will help your dc in the long run. btdt x 2

    • I know what you mean. I just try to be thankful that dd is adjusting super well. She seems very excited about school. I also plan to get involved with the school.

      • It's so hard to get involved as a working parent. This week has been killer. 2 hour days, then this AM was a workshop for parents and there's a family party at 3:30. My dd was so upset that I wasn't coming to the family party, and I'm a bit bitter that the school is putting working families in this situation.

        • Is this a private school? Our public school is so different from this.

    • What the hell do you think she's doing? It's K! Ask the teacher if you have concerns.

    • This is only the first week of school. I don't think they have that much to tell you. If she's already loving it, than that should speak for itself.
